About the Event
From the start of my wellness journey, holistic practitioners told me the cosmetics I was using could be contributing to my cystic acne, as well as a host of other potential health issues down the road. Gradually, I began swapping out my deodorant, haircare, skin and body care for safer, simpler and more plant-based options.
But it wasn’t until years later, when I decided to become a health coach, that I committed to going all the way by cleaning up the makeup in both my personal and professional makeup kits. I knew that I couldn’t talk to women about beauty and wellness without addressing ALL of the products we apply to our face and body daily!
The problem with conventional cosmetics is that studies show so many of their ingredients are linked to various women's health issues including hormonal imbalances, infertility and cancer. Some of the most toxic ingredients are found in beauty products marketed to Black women and women of color, which is connected with an increased risk of fibroid tumors, breast cancer and more. This is unacceptable.
On September 30th, California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed the Toxic-Free Cosmetics Act, Assembly Bill 2762, the nation’s first state-level ban of 24 toxic ingredients, into law. In essence, this ban prohibits a person or brand from manufacturing or selling cosmetics that contain any of the specified ingredients. This is a HUGE win and I’m super proud of California for being an example for the rest of the country. But, federal change is slow and this won’t go into effect until 2025.
In the meantime, we can make much more progress together by educating ourselves and our loved ones about the benefits of choosing cleaner, healthier and better beauty.
